Course Information

This course is designed to provide learners with the required skills and knowledge relating to all aspects associated with the operation of an excavator to lift carry and place materials.

Participants will be able to demonstrate safe and effective skills required to operate this type of machine in a safe and confident manner.

Candidates will take a written theory test, and complete a practical assessment.

On successful completion of this course applicants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

Course Content Includes:

  • The planning processes for machine operations
  • Role and responsibility of a plant operator
  • Relevant regulations and legislation
  • Pre-start, operational and post-operational machine checks
  • Hazards, underground & overhead services
  • Machine types, load charts, capabilities & limitations
  • Soil characteristics, excavation & ground types
  • Earthwork calculations
  • Travelling & positioning the machine safely and efficiently
  • Safe operating methods & adjusting techniques to suit changes in site conditions
  • Typical excavator tasks including trench excavation, levelling, benching, battering, cutting, boxing, stock piling and loading trucks
  • Lifting, moving, placing & travelling with basic slung loads
  • Fit and operate ancillary equipment
  • Assist with the transportation of the machine between sites
  • Shutdown & securing procedures

Duration

The course duration will depend on the level of operational experience held by the applicant although typically, course durations range from 1 – 10 days.

Training Location

Training can be conducted at our Laverton training centre or on your premises provided certain requirements are met.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or over

Learners must undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment to assist in determining suitability

Birth Certificate, Drivers Licence or Passport must be presented as evidence of ID

Prior knowledge of health & safety issues or machine operation is not essential

There are no pre-requisite units of competency applicable for this qualification.
