Course Outcome

Learners who successfully complete this course, will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the above unit of competency and will ensure learners are eligible to apply for their High Risk Work ‘CB’ licence.

Course Overview

This course is a requirement for any person who operates a bridge and gantry crane controlled from either a permanent cabin or control station on the crane and those which are remote or pendant controlled and has more than three powered functions. Note: hoist (raise and lower), cross travel (east and west) and long travel (north and south) are each classed as one function.

You will be taught:

  • Pre -planning the work, identifying hazards and implementing suitable control measures
  • How to carry out a pre-start & post operational inspections of the crane
  • Methods for estimating loads
  • Determining the configuration of the crane to suit a range of loads
  • An understanding of crane characteristics and capabilities to support safe operation of a crane


The course is conducted over 3 days and includes theory and practical. The theoretical components will be conducted in the classroom face-to-face and the practical elements will be demonstrated, practised and assessed in a simulated environment
or approved workplace location.

Training Location

Training is conducted on the clients premises.

Learners must be over the age of 18 to be eligible to undertake a HRW assessment.

Learners must be reasonably fit and comfortable with working at heights as they will be required to access the crane bridge for inspection purposes.

Birth Certificate, Drivers Licence or Passport must be presented as evidence of ID.
